What is intervention? Intervention is an attempt to curb the wayward behavior of an individual that is destructive to his/herself,
family, community and future. As an intervention, the Juvenile Court Counselor facilitates a five week AODA education class for youth who have been court ordered to participate in the Alternate Routes Program in lieu of paying their underage drinking fine. The early intervention program allows a youth to make an informed decision about continued alcohol and drug use through the teachings by Laura Bureny Nissen, PH.D., M.S.W., and author of the "Alternate Routes" An Alcohol Diversion Program workbook. In addition to the diversion workbook, the First Nation philosophy of the Medicine Wheel is incorporated into the curriculum as a learning tool and stories. Each week a topic is examined through discussion, such as the following:
Week 1: Changes & Identity
Week 2: Responsibility & How Alcohol Got You Here Week 3: Relationships & Your Vision Week 4: Reaching & Spirituality Week 5: Justice, Your Gifts, Having Fun & Staying Safe; "Family Night" |
