Department Overview
Welcome Statement
The Director and Staff welcome you to Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center on behalf of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. We are proud of the facilities and programs which have developed on the Menominee Indian Reservation. The success found in working with program participants enables us to look forward to each new day and continue to assist clients to begin healing the pains that the abuse of alcohol and drugs has brought to the Menominee People.

While many of our programs are new and others are continuously improving to meet the needs of the changing community, the principles on which they are built are as old as our forefathers. It is because of their determination and wealth of spirit that we are able to open our doors and welcome in all of those who have a need. It is in that spirit that we welcome you to the facility.

We strongly believe that the programs we foster here, will enable the Menominee Nation to experience that which the Menominee phrase "Maehnowesekiyah", pronounced Mano-way-say-key-ah means, WE WILL ALL FEEL BETTER!

All are invited to visit our facility. We sincerely hope you will find we do have something to offer the people of our community.

Today at Maehnowesekiyah
The growth at Maenowesekiyah Wellness Center continues today. The Menominee Tribe employs over 48 individuals in the various programs the the Wellness Center offers. Services have grown from the original halfway house to a variety of Outpatient, Youth, Family and Community programs.

In 1994, the construction of a 24,000 square foot headquarters building for Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center was completed. this building now houses all therapy rooms needed for the Wellness Center, classrooms, offices, and the main kitchen for the residential facilities. The new headquarters was dedicated in honor of Mildred Butler who retired in 1994 and was the agency's first certified Menominee AODA counselor. The dedication plaques reads, "Much of our sucess as a treatment center is attributable to her.

Looking Back
Recognizing the need to address the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs on the reservation, the Menominee Indian Tribe opened Maehnowesekiyah in 1986. The program served as a place where Menominees affected with substance abuse could work on recovery and begin anew.

In 1986, renovation of the Maehnowesekiyah facility was completed. Added to the former Volland's farmhouse were additional residents rooms, rest rooms, and large multipurpose room for group meetings and other functions. The facility was licensed as a sixteen(16) bed Community Based Residential Facility.

In 1990, a residential facility was dedicated to a community advocate for a drug-free community. A dedication service was conducted at Maehnowesekiyah in honor of Mary Jane Cox(1919-1989) citing her efforts in assisting Menominee people lead a chemical-free lifestyle.

Philosophy
Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center affirms that all people experience a unique culture based on their own values, history, and spiritual ways. We understand that each individual deserves the utmost respect for the values, beliefs, and strengths they bring with them to our programs. We are witness to the destructive effects alcohol and other drugs have on our culture. We recognize that through education, therapy, and support, individuals are better equipped to make inform decisions.
  • We believe all individuals deserve to be treated with dignity, honesty, and individuality.
  • We believe in the importance of education in self-awareness, self-development and growth.
  • We believe each child is unique and deserves the opportunity to grow and experience that uniqueness.
  • We believe that a variety of approaches are successful in assisting the individual to attain physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
  • We seek to heal holistically by treating the individual and the family.

Grant me the Serentiy to accpet the things I cannot change,
Courage to chage the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
