JOM & JTP Host Summer Youth Employee Picnic

Menominee youth benefitting from jobs provided by JTP and JOM programs were invited to attend an “employee picnic” Wednesday, July 23rd outside the CRC Building.
The departments provided Music, Chili, Burgers, Fruit, Veggies, Fresh made Cotton Candy and Slushies along with other refreshments for the youth to enjoy. Activities included Basketball and Volleyball, and Water Balloon-Towel Volley Ball.
This year, JOM employed 20 youth, while JTP provided 60 jobs along with another 20 provided.... (More)

My Fellow Tribal Members:
I have recently been signing up with various organizations for volunteering opportunities. Upon visiting one local organization, I encountered a situation that weighed heavy on me, which inspired me to write this letter. When I asked about volunteering, the personnel asked what I was on, this really confused me, I was thinking drugs?? Nothing! I answered: Nothing, why? Summer Trails Program Starts

Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center’s Prevention Department provides summer Trails program to Menominee youth. The department provides transportation to the kids involved, picking them up and dropping them off at home Tues-Thursday each week of the 4 week program.
The goal of the Trails program is, obviously, alcohol and drug awareness and prevention. The students will be discussing these issues along with key concerns such as the dangers of drinking and driving.

Teen Night Block Party in Neopit a Success

Maehnowesekiyah sponsored the Teen Night Block Party held at the Park in Neopit on July 23, 2008. The Teen Night events were planned and coordinated by various departments who stepped up to volunteer their time and budget to help encourage substance free activities for local teens.

Tribal Chair signs off on strip mall project

At every trimonthly community meeting people have probably heard that the reservation needs this or that, because people are tired of going to Shawano to get all their basic needs.
However, that will come to an end soon as on July 31, Tribal Chair Lisa Waukau and Menominee Tribal Member Dyan Nickey (a CMN graduate), signed off on a long-term lease agreement that will allow a strip mall to be built next to the casino, across from the College of Menominee Nation.

Tribal Police Department continues to work for Menominee Community

The police department has been very busy this summer in numerous efforts to help the community.
Vandalism Investigation
Because a lot of places hit by vandals this summer are used by the general public a lot, vandalism may seem to be prevalent this summer.
However, according to data compiled by the Menominee Tribal Police, the incidents of reported damage to places is down from previous years.

Wisconsin's First Lady Visits reservation

On July 29, Jessica Doyle, the First Lady of Wisconsin, stopped by the College of Menominee Nation for the first time to talk with several eighth and ninth grade students about the Menominee culture and the educational opportunities the state provides for them.
Before her husband (Democrat Jim Doyle) became governor, Doyle used to work in the Wisconsin school system; and before that she was in Arizona, where she taught a lot of Navajo students.

Despite Vandalism Tribal Housing Families Move Home

About a few weeks ago, houses along Burnette Lane (Pine Ridge) were spray painted in random acts of vandalism. The graffiti defaced newly sided homes that were under renovation by the Menominee Tribal Housing Department’s Tax Rehab Program. The houses were left standing empty with boarded windows in attempt to prevent break-ins and subsequent interior damage due to vandalism. Interactive Television? - What Digital Television Has to Offer

By now, most people are aware of the upcoming transition to digital broadcast television (DTV). If you haven’t yet heard, the federal government has set a deadline of February 17, 2009 for all full power broadcast television stations to begin transmitting in digital format. The former analog format consumes more airwaves creating “congestion,” so to speak. Local governments receive share of fuel tax, registration fees

Governor Jim Doyle has announced that quarterly checks totaling $103.5 million for General Transportation Aids, Connecting Highway Aids, and Expressway Policing Aids have been conveyed to Wisconsin units of local government.
"Wisconsin's quality system of federal, state and local roadways are the backbone of our economy," Governor Doyle said. "These local transportation aids represent a vital investment in supporting the safe, efficient movement of both people and commerce."

Menominee Warrior Tradition continues

Recently Menominee County has been getting a lot of recognition lately for its contributions to the United States Armed Forces.
According to Department of Defense data, Menominee County was second in the nation in per-capita Army recruiting from 2004 to 2007.
The only county that exceeded Menominee County was Geary County in Kansas, home to Fort Riley and the First Infantry Division (three of the other top ten recruiting counties in the United States were also home to large Army posts).

On the morning of July 9, Johnson O'Malley (JOM) Youths and some other younger tribal members went to the lecture "Your Record and How It Follows You" at the Campus Commons at the College of Menominee Nation where they heard from law enforcement and housing officials on how accumulating crime charges would have negative affects on them later in life.

Sentencing date moved to August 11 for Menominee man charged with beating infant

A Menominee man who has been charged in the beating death of a newborn had his sentencing date moved from July 2 to August 11.
In October 2007, David A. Waupoose, Jr., 24, of Keshena was charged with the death of eight-week-old Jace Madosh.
Waupoose was the boyfriend of Ashley Madosh, the mother of the child.
A criminal complaint accuses Waupoose of striking, head-butting and violently shaking Jace when he wouldn't stop crying.
Prosecutors say the abuse led to a skull fracture and brain hem.... (More)
Shawano Community Fly Out

The 21st Annual Shawano Community Fly Out will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the Shawano City/County Airport 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Airplanes including vintage models will arrive between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. from the EAA Air Adventure in Oshkosh and other locations.

Great changes made with Menominee Tribal Judiciary

Recently, members of the public have noticed great changes at Menominee Tribal Courts. The appointment of Rita Keshena as new Chief Justice in November 2007 was the first of many changes. Chief Justice Keshena is a member of the Wisconsin State Bar and served as Tribal Attorney for the Menominee Indian Tribe from 1981 until 2007.
Upon appointment, Chief Justice Keshena has made every effort to observe and assess the present Tribal Judiciary system and identify areas that need improvement. .... (More)

Keshena man accused of harboring Milwaukee murder suspect

A Keshena man is facing possible prison time for allegedly hiding a fugitive murder suspect at a house he owns in the Town of Richmond.
Jeremy Nunway, 28, was charged July 1 with a felony count of harboring or aiding a felon and faces a maximum of three-and-a-half years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Although the house the fugitive was found in is located in Richmond on Shawano County Road MMM, the criminal lists Nunway's address as Keshena (he bought the Richmond home last year.)
